What exactly is a red carpet?
Beyond the carpet itself, when we talk about a red carpet we refer to the route taken by personalities from different fields when attending an event. It is part of the protocol of the organization of events and is used to mark the way for the guests of honor, as a way of highlighting their relevance in the event.
They are not only used in the field of fashion. They are also popular at corporate, political, diplomatic events, etc.
Fun fact: The longest red carpet in the world measures 6,358.6 m (20,861.55 ft; 3.95 miles) and was displayed and used in the streets of the city of Almería, Spain. Such a feat served the city in southern Spain to enter the Guinness Book of Records.
What is the history of red carpets?
The earliest known reference to walking a red carpet in literature is in Aeschylus’ play Agamemnon, written in 458 BC. when the title character returns from Troy. He is greeted by his wife Clytemnestra, who offers him a red path to walk:
¨Now, my beloved, get down from your chariot and do not allow your foot, my lord, to touch the Earth. Servants, may he spread out before the house he never expected to see (…) a crimson path.¨
Also in Renaissance paintings it is common to see rugs placed on the steps to a throne or on a dais where rulers or holy figures are placed.
A red carpet was rolled out to a river to welcome the arrival of United States President James Monroe in 1821. In 1902, the New York Central Railroad used plush crimson carpets to direct people as they boarded their train. 20th century passengers. This is believed to be the origin of the phrase “red carpet treatment.”
Red carpets are often laid out at movie premieres, but it wasn’t until the 1920s that the red carpet and Hollywood became synonymous. The crimson carpet was rolled out for the Hollywood premiere of Robin Hood, starring Douglas Fairbanks, in front of the Egyptian Theater in 1922. And for the next several decades, there were only a few places where audiences caught glimpses of charismatic stars like Clark Gable, Jimmy Stewart and Grace Kelly, and the red carpet was one of them.
There is more…
Then, in 1961, the red carpet was rolled out at the Academy Awards at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. A few years later, the ceremony’s announcers opted to film off-site, showing the arrival of the guests as they emerged from their limousines. From this point in 1964, the red carpet became a globally recognized focal point for actors and actresses to make a grand entrance and show off at the Oscars.
The rest is history: Today the red carpet is part of the ceremony of many events. In the world of fashion, it is the kind of catwalk where we see celebrities walking down the catwalk to detail the outfits they choose to wear at events. That’s why we love them.
How to dress for the red carpet
Red carpet events are that chance to shine. Thus, with these tips on how to dress for the red carpet, we hope to give you some general tips to shine on formal occasions.
Although you may not be rubbing shoulders with celebrities, that doesn’t mean you should go in jeans and a T-shirt. Do you want to know what the experts recommend?
Always dress according to:
1. The event tag. Red carpet events are usually galas.
2. The weather or season of the year in which the event takes place.
3. The shape of your body. Beyond fashion, opt for styles and clothes that really flatter your figure.
4. The time the event will take place. Formal etiquette at night is not the same as during the day.
5. Type of event: cinema, art, charity, corporate event, etc. If it is, for example, a more professional diplomatic event, the more formal label prefers to impress with elegance rather than cuts or necklines that are too pronounced.
Choose the right outfit
Your outfit is the most important piece of the red carpet dress code puzzle. A cocktail dress is a safe choice for most red carpet events, especially if you go for a safe black dress and adorn it with some statement jewelry.
If you want to get out of your comfort zone, look for a more memorable outfit. Floor length evening dresses always look amazing, but choose a design that flatters your body shape. Wire mesh is very “on” right now. Red is another popular color if you want to stand out.
As we have said before: Try to avoid dresses that are too low-cut or tight.
Suitable Underwear
Wear suitable underwear for the clothes you are going to wear. The girdle is perfect to help you look spectacular at red carpet events. Also wear a good quality bra that fits your chest and dress properly to avoid any problems.
Choose accessories carefully
Not wearing too many accessories is a must. Celebrities who do well on the red carpet often go for gorgeous accessories that really add to their look but don’t go overboard.
If you have to carry a bag, keep it small.
